Our goal

We want to support the people and the organizations from Kyoto who strive to bring happiness into people’s lives. Through award ceremonies and educational events revolving around the topic of happiness, we will not only highlight and reward those whose commitment to the cause of happiness was most outstanding, but we also hope to play our part in making the world around us a better, happier place.

about

A word from the president

As a medical doctor, I have been dedicating myself life to helping the people around me and to fulfilling that responsibility at all times. With my motto of being “full of life, in the body and in the mind” at heart, I have spent my life catering to the wellbeing of my family, my patients, my employees as well as my wellbeing. As such, “happiness” gradually became a cornerstone of my philosophy, not only a doctor but also as an entrepreneur. Juggling between these two roles gave me a unique opportunity to experience and engage with “happiness” in various circumstances. Moreover, these experiences allowed me to rethink what happiness and wellbeing meant in a business. More specifically, it led me to devise a concept that I have dubbed “wellness accounting”, which enabled me to better visualize what happiness stands for in a company.

However, the meaning of happiness transcends the entrepreneurial or medical context. Happiness is an ordinary desire shaped by history, trends, politics, our environment, our cultures and traditions, or human interactions. And even if each person has their own definition of happiness, we all equally entitled to lead a fulfilled and happy life.

The current global landscape is marked by a series of potentially world-changing events. This is cause for great concern as we live today in a world where, for better or for worse, and no matter where or when, you may suffer the consequences of something that happened on the other side of the planet. While technology continues to evolve at an extraordinary rate and we become more interconnected, the world becomes more divided and our happiness only continues to dwindle. Thus, the pursuit of happiness is now more relevant than ever. It is my strong wish that we learn to understand each other and that we learn to share, so as to make a real progress towards the happiness of all of us. This foundation was built upon this wish, and it is the best way I can contribute to long-lasting happiness to those around me. By encouraging and supporting the people who dedicate their lives to the wellbeing of others, I hope that the Tanabe Happiness Foundation nurtures happiness of all shapes and forms, to people from all walks of life.
